Grants Program Deadline Extension

August 4th, 2010

Due to major storms in the Washington, D.C. area last week that disrupted email and phone service to The Wildlife Society headquarters, we are extending the application deadline for the 2010 Native American Professional Development Travel Grants Program to August 20, 2010. This exciting new program provides grants of up to $1,500 for students to attend The Wildlife Society’s annual conference in Snowbird, Utah, October 2-6, 2010. The conference offers a plethora of activities aimed at students’ professional development, including events to meet professionals, learn how to find wildlife jobs, and socialize with other students. Please help us spread the word about this unique opportunity to any eligible students that you know. Details of the program can be found here.

Thank you!

Celebrating Our Wildlife Conservation Heritage

November 9th, 2009

The Celebrating Our Wildlife Conservation Heritage or COWCH was created with the goal of preserving the history and evolution of the wildlife profession by interviewing influential wildlife biologist, educators, managers, and other pioneers.

To date we have recorded more than 60 COWCH interviews with distinguished leaders in the wildlife profession including students of Aldo Leopold, charter members of TWS, Aldo Leopold Award winners, past-presidents of TWS, and other trail-blazers in wildlife management and conservation. These interviews—along with many more we hope to do—form a priceless record of the roots of our profession.

September 30th, 2009

Terry Hershey, district ranger with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District, Leah Fisher and Zachary Simmons of the district’s regulatory division, and planning division’s Stacy Samuelson, reached out to attendees at The Wildlife Society’s 16th annual conference in Monterey, Calif., Sept. 21 with an emerging message: the Corps is a great, but unheralded place to work in environmental stewardship.

Nearly 1,500 wildlife professionals and students from around the country attended the conference, which featured a career fair where Hershey, Fisher, Simmons and Samuelson presented information on the Corps’ regulatory, planning, natural resource management and recreation programs.

Eight More Days Until The Wildlife Society Annual Conference

September 11th, 2009

With just eight days until the kick-off of the 16th Annual Wildlife Society Annual Conference, there is still time to register.  By registering in advance, you will save time.

The Plenary is titled “Wildlife Science, Its Use and Abuse by Decision Makers”.  You don’t want to miss the panel discussion that will take place during the Plenary.  Following the Plenary is the TWS Awards Ceremony and Members Meeting.  This is followed by an evening of networking at the Opening Night Reception and Dinner at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.  During this time, we will have a special reception to honor this year’s Aldo Leopold Award Winner.

By attending the conference, you will be able to participate in the TWS Career Fair, where you can meet with 18 different agencies and companies.  Also during the Career Fair there will be a special session on getting a job with a Federal agency as well as a personal resume critique.

If you haven’t signed up for a field trip or a workshop yet, you’ll want to do that.  While some have sold-out, we still have space available for others.

See you in Monterey.
