Controversy exists in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties in northern California about the strategies and techniques used to reduce black bear (Ursu samericanus) damage to coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens). In this paper we review what is known about the biology of bears living in coast redwood habitat as well as redwood forest management techniques. We propose a new strategy for dealing with bear damage problems to redwoods based on current knowledge, new research, and an awareness and appreciation for both wildlife values of bears and legitimate commercial management and use of redwood timber.
