Abstract:
Wolverines (Gulo gulo) historically occurred in mountainous areas of California from the north coast to the Cascades, and south to the southern Sierra Nevada. Populations were severely reduced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by commercial trapping. Current distribution is based mostly on sporadic, unverified reports of sightings and tracks. We used remote photographic bait stations in areas of historic range and recent reports in an attempt to document the current existence of wolverines in California. Wolverines were not detected through the spring of 1992.
